Random team wheel: put each name on a team by spinning

Eight teams sit on the wheel. Each person spins once and takes the team the pointer lands on, so nobody can be accused of stacking the sides.

Picking captains and letting them choose leaves the last person picked feeling it, and paper slips need someone to trust. Here the team list is on screen, every draw happens in front of the group, and nothing about the result is in anyone's hands. The sample wheel carries eight colour teams. Cut it down to the number you need or rename them after the real sides.

How do I split a group into teams?

Leave one slice per team, keep only as many teams as you are making, then let each person spin once. The slice they land on is their team, and the results tab keeps the full list.

  1. Keep one slice per team

Making two teams, delete down to two slices. Rename the colours if your sides already have names.

  2. One spin per person

Work down the register. Each person spins once and reads their team out.

  3. Copy the finished line-up

The results tab holds the draws in order. Use copy to paste the line-up into your group chat or onto the board.

Random team wheel questions

Can it split a whole list into teams in one click?

This wheel draws one person at a time so the group watches every draw land. To cut a whole pasted list into teams in a single click, use the random team generator linked at the bottom of this page.

How do I keep the teams the same size?

Watch the results tab and delete a team once it is full. Splitting sixteen people into four teams, remove each team as it reaches four members, and everyone left can only land on the teams that still have room.

Is the draw actually random?

Yes. Every spin takes a number from crypto.getRandomValues, the source browsers reserve for security work, and each slice is the same width so each team has the same chance. The fairness page shows how to check it yourself.
