Pickleball draw wheel: pair players for doubles

One slice per player who turned up today. Two spins make a pair, those names leave the wheel, and you carry on until the courts are full.

Pairing up is where an open session gets awkward, especially when standards vary and everyone can see who was picked last. Drawing partners on a phone in front of the group settles it faster than a discussion, and drawn names leave the wheel so nobody has to remember who has already played with whom. The sample list holds twelve players. Paste today's names over it.

How do I draw doubles partners?

Paste the names of everyone present onto the wheel and spin twice for each pair. Both drawn names leave the wheel, so later spins only offer players who are still waiting.

  1. Paste who turned up

One name per line. Anyone arriving late goes in through the add box at the bottom of the list.

  2. Two spins make a pair

The first spin gives one player, the second gives their partner. Read them out and write the pair on the court board.

  3. Carry on to the next court

Keep drawing two at a time until the names run out. The results tab keeps the order if anyone queries a pairing.

Pickleball draw questions

Does a random draw work when standards vary?

It does if you draw within levels. Put the stronger players on the wheel and draw that group out, then do the same with the rest. The matches stay competitive and who plays with whom is still nobody's decision.

Who sits out when the numbers are odd?

Add a slice reading sit out this game. Whoever draws it rests for that round and comes back in for the next one, which makes sitting out part of the draw rather than something you have to ask a player to do.

What about drawing groups for a tournament?

The tournament group draw template in this category fits better: each slice there is a group and each team spins to find its group. This one pairs players from a list of names.
