Random team generator: split a list of names into teams

Paste the names, choose a number of teams or a team size, and split. When the group wants to watch, spin the wheel for one person at a time instead.

How does the random team generator work?

It shuffles your list with the browser's cryptographic random source, then deals the names out one team at a time, so every split is equally likely and team sizes never differ by more than one.

  1. Paste the names

The bulk box is already open. Put one name per line; untick anyone sitting this round out.

  2. Choose the teams

Type how many teams you need, or switch to people per team when you want fixed groups such as pairs or fours.

  3. Make teams

The teams appear under the wheel. Press again for a fresh split, then copy the result into a chat or a sheet.

Why use this team generator

It is quick, it keeps teams even, and nobody gets to hand-pick their friends, so the split feels fair to everyone in the room.

  • Sizes within one

Ten people in three teams come out as 4, 3 and 3, never 5, 3 and 2.

  • Teams or team size

Two sides for a match or groups of four for a project, both work.

  • A wheel for the reveal

Spin the same list one name at a time when the drama is the point.

  • Copy in one go

The result is plain text, ready for a group chat, an email or a spreadsheet.

  • No sign-up

Free on phones and laptops, and the list stays in your browser.

These come up before most class projects, sports sessions and team-building days.

Random team generator questions

Is the team split really random?

Yes. The list is shuffled with crypto.getRandomValues, so every order has the same chance, and names are then dealt into teams in turn. Nobody, including the person pressing the button, can steer who lands where.

What happens with an odd number of people?

The extra people go to the first teams one each, so teams differ by one person at most. Eleven people in two teams make 6 and 5.

Can I set the team size instead of the number of teams?

Yes. Switch to people per team and the generator works out how many teams that makes, rounding up so nobody is left without a team.

Can I reshuffle the teams?

Yes. Press make teams again for a new split of the same list. Each split is independent of the last one.

Can I save the list for next time?

Sign in and save the wheel, and the list waits in your dashboard. Without an account it is gone when you leave the page.

Built to be trusted

The team generator runs in your browser. Lists are stored only when you sign in and save a wheel, connections use HTTPS, and every split draws from crypto.getRandomValues.
