Lucky money wheel: a wish with every red envelope
Twelve new year wishes sit on the wheel. Each child spins once, takes the envelope that comes with the wish they landed on, and the room gets a moment out of it.
Handing red envelopes straight across is quick but the anticipation goes with it, and asking children to sing for one puts the shy ones on the spot. One spin each lands in between: every child gets their own wish read out, the adult hands over the envelope, and the table has something to laugh about. The twelve sample wishes suit a family gathering. Rewrite them in your family's own words.
How do you play the lucky money wheel?
Open the wheel on a phone or a television, let each person spin once, and hand over the red envelope along with the wish that came up. A turn takes under ten seconds.
- Edit the wishes
Keep the ones you like and add your own for grandparents, for the children, or for whoever came home from far away.
- One spin each
Pass the phone to the children so they press it themselves. Go fullscreen if you are casting to the living room television.
- Read the wish, hand over the envelope
Read what came up out loud before handing the envelope across, so the wish belongs to that person.
Lucky money wheel questions
Should the amounts go on the wheel?
Better not to. Putting sums on the slices turns the moment into a comparison and leaves a child upset over a small one. Wishes keep the fun of spinning while what goes inside the envelope stays the adults' decision, exactly as it always was.
Large family, how do I avoid repeating a wish?
Open advanced settings and set after win to remove, and each wish is then used once. If there are more people than slices, add a few more wishes before you start.
Can we play it on the television?
Yes. Open the page in the television's browser or cast your phone screen to it, then press fullscreen. The wheel redraws itself to the screen size, so the words stay readable from across the room.
