Safety valve wheel: call on a student without cornering them
The wheel carries your class list plus four escape slices, so whoever stops at the pointer always has a way to answer, hand the question on, or pass.
Cold calling keeps a class awake, but it also silences the students who freeze. Adding escape slices keeps the surprise and removes the trap: nobody knows whether the pointer will land on a name or on a way out, so everyone stays ready. The sample list holds eight names and four valves. Swap the names for your own register and spin.
How does the safety valve wheel work?
Paste your class list onto the wheel, leave the four valve slices in place, and spin whenever you want an answer. The pointer lands either on a student or on a different way to answer.
- Swap the eight sample names
Open the bulk box and paste one name per line. The four valve slices sit at the end of the list, so leave them where they are.
- Spin when you need an answer
Tap the middle of the wheel or press space. Go fullscreen so the class can watch the result land.
- Play the valve that comes up
On phone a friend or table huddle, the student who was called picks who helps. On pass this turn, spin once more.
Safety valve wheel questions
Why add escape slices instead of only names?
Because a straight cold call makes anxious students go quiet, and the room loses the answer along with the student. With a valve on the wheel, the student who is called still takes part, just in a different way, and the class gets used to being asked. Rewrite the four valve slices in your own words to match how your room works.
Does remove after win delete my valve slices too?
Yes. The wheel removes whatever the pointer landed on, valves included. If you want the escapes available all lesson, type the slice back in after it is used, or switch remove after win on only in the second half of the lesson once most students have had a turn.
Can I keep the class list for next lesson?
Yes. Sign in, save the wheel under the class name, and open it from your dashboard next time with the names and the valves intact. Without an account the list stays in your browser only and goes when you leave the page.
